Covering over 1.75 million square miles of public and privately managed lands, the Western Native Trout Initiative (WNTI) and its partners combine science-based assessments with expert and local knowledge to establish joint priorities for western native trout conservation at a landscape scale.
Partnership is the key ingredient to the success of WNTI. Partners work together to become one voice for the future of western native trout. Partners give local, regional, or national support, either through time, money or staff time. Because the Initiative is a long-term effort and includes many agencies, organizations, and individuals with different fields of expertise, each partner is a vital contributor in conserving WNTI’s 21 different focal species of western native trout and char species.
One of WNTI’s primary core functions is to direct funding to support native trout conservation projects including habitat restoration, fish passage and reconnection of habitats, protective fish barriers, and species status assessments. In addition to our annual Request for Proposals for funding from the National Fish Habitat Partnership Program (NFHP), WNTI began in 2017 to create “conservation portfolios” to accelerate implementation of a series of projects in a high priority watershed or drainage by helping to secure additional funding from a variety of public/private sources.
